Marinda HIVELY & Josiah H. SHAFFER
Sarah Catherine SCHAFFER was born on 20 Dec. 1853 in OH, as the only living child of Josiah H. SHAFFER (1826- 1 June 1878) and Marinda HIVELY (8 March 1829- 1 April 1882).
Generation-to-Generation story goes:
My ancestors traveled in covered wagon days from California to Lewis County, Washington Territory in the 1870's. Sarah SCHAFFER married Richard C. PARNEL in 1872, but we're not sure if he was already residing here in Washington or traveled with them from California. Marinda's husband, Josiah H. SHAFFER died in 1878, possibly while they were living in Claquato, Lewis County, Washington Territory.

They purchased 80 acres of land for $2.50/acre ; then another 80 acres in 1879 for a total of 160 acres in the area of Tildon, Lewis County, Washington Territory. (Where Shoestring Cemetery in Onalaska is today.)
Marinda lived there with her daughter, Sarah and son-in-law, Richard C. PARNEL. They slashed, burned and cultivated part of the land for farming wheat oats and vegetables. They lived in a one-story log house [14 x 24 feet] covered with shakes; it had 2 rooms, 3 windows and 2 doors.
Out buildings included a post barn [36 x 48] for farming implements, wagon, horse and cattle; hen house [10 x 12]; smoke house [10 x 12]; root house [10 x 12]; and wood shed [20 x 32]. They had an orchard of 60 fruit trees, small fruits consisting of strawberries, currents and blackberries.

Richard Coville PARNEL was born on 30 Jan. 1834 in KY. They married on 6 Jan. 1872, with 14 children from this union. Their sixth child, John PARNEL, is my lineage link.
